President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has vowed continued support to Filipino seafarers as he led the Ceremonial Signing of the Magna Carta of Filipino Seafarers at Malacañan Palace on Monday.

The new law aims to uphold the fundamental rights of overseas seafarers: their right to fair wages, safe working conditions, and skills and competency development.

“So, as you navigate the unpredictable waters of your journey, remember that your country stands with you, proudly cheering you on, and working tirelessly to ensure that every voyage you take is safer, fairer, and more dignified,” President Marcos said.

The President said Filipino seafarers are the embodiment of the Bagong Pilipino spirit – resilient, hopeful, and always moving forward.

“This is our pledge: to sail with you, every step of the way, until you find your way home safely back to the Bagong Pilipinas,” he said.

He said the Magna Carta was crafted for the prosperity of Filipino seafarers, the industry, and the country. It will give Filipino seafarers not only fair wages but also recognition for their hard work and dedication, he added.

It will also create safe working conditions for seafarers, help develop their skills to promote career growth, and shield them not only from the perils of the sea, but from exploitation and discrimination.

Likewise, the Magna Carta will strengthen the legal framework to ensure that Filipino seafarers receive adequate training, secure contracts, just wages, and fair benefits.

“This will seamlessly align with the Standards for Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping or STCW, as well as the accepted global maritime labor laws,” the President said.

The new law will also strengthen the role of maritime institutions and stakeholders by setting standards for the quality of accommodation, food, medical care, and other services for seafarers, he added. *PND* – AL
