Nilagdaan na ni Pangulong Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. bilang batas ang Philippine Maritime Zones Act at Philippine Archipelagic Sea Lanes Act na layong tukuyin at palakasin ang mga karapatan ng Pilipinas pagdating sa mga sakop na maritime zones nito.
Binigyang-diin ng Pangulo ang kahalagahan ng dalawang batas para maisulong ang ‘maritime and archipelagic identity’ ng bansa sa kanyang mensahe sa ginanap na ceremonial signing sa Malacañang Palace ngayong Biyernes.
“With these pieces of legislation, we align our domestic laws with international law, specifically the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea or UNCLOS, improve our capacity for governance, and reinforce our maritime policies for economic development and for national security,” saad ni Pangulong Marcos Jr.
Idedeklara sa ilalim ng Philippine Maritime Zones Act ang mga maritime zone ng bansa tulad ng internal waters, archipelagic waters, territorial sea, contiguous zones, at exclusive economic zones (EEZ) alinsunod sa pamantayang itinakda ng United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
Ayon sa Pangulo, mahalaga ang batas lalo na sa mga mangingisda upang matiyak na malaya nilang napakikinabangan ang yaman ng karagatan ng sariling bansa.
“Our people, especially our fisherfolk, should be able to pursue their livelihood free from uncertainty and harassment. We must be able to harness mineral and energy resources in our seabed” pagbibigay-diin ng Pangulo.
Samantala, ang Philippine Archipelagic Sea Lanes Act naman ay magtatatag ng ‘archipelagic sea lanes and air routes system’ para sa mga dayuhang sasakyang-pandagat at panghimpapawid nang hindi nakokompromiso ang seguridad ng Pilipinas.
“The designated archipelagic sea lanes and air routes aim to facilitate safe passage for foreign ships and aircraft without compromising our national security nor diminishing our capacity for good environmental stewardship,” paliwanag ng Pangulo.
Binigyang-diin ng punong ehekutibo na makatutulong ang dalawang bagong batas sa patuloy na pagtatanggol ng bansa sa mga sakop nitong teritoryo.
“It is my fervent hope that with the help of these two laws, we will continue to pursue and defend our maritime interests and navigate towards a brighter and stronger Bagong Pilipinas,” saad ni Pangulong Marcos Jr. -VC
