Pope Francis, 88, has developed pneumonia in both lungs while receiving treatment for bronchitis at Rome’s Gemelli hospital, the Vatican confirmed Tuesday. Despite the complications, the pontiff remains in “good spirits”.

In its latest update, the Holy See Press Office stated that “laboratory tests, chest X-rays, and the clinical condition of the Holy Father continue to present a complex picture.”

Doctors identified a “polymicrobial infection” linked to bronchiectasis and asthmatic bronchitis, requiring corticosteroids and antibiotics, which has made treatment more challenging.

A follow-up CT scan on Tuesday afternoon confirmed the onset of bilateral pneumonia, leading to additional pharmacological therapy. However, the Pope continues to rest, pray, and read throughout the day. He also received the Eucharist and expressed gratitude for the support and prayers from around the world.

Francis, who had part of his lung removed at 21 due to pleurisy, was hospitalized last Friday after struggling to read in public. While his schedule has been adjusted, he remains engaged with Church affairs.

Supporters worldwide have offered prayer, with many gathering outside the hospital. The Vatican reiterated the pope’s appreciation for their well-wishes and asked for continued prayers for his recovery. – AL
