Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Acting Secretary Cesar Chavez on Monday underscored the enduring importance of print media in the era of mass digitalization and artificial intelligence.
In a speech delivered by PCO Senior Undersecretary Emerald Anne Ridao during the UPMGPhils Tinta Print Media Conference 2024, Chavez emphasized the relevance of print media in the years and decades to come.
“I am honored to stand before you, as we open a meaningful discussion on the worth of print media in the age of mass digitalization,” Chavez said.
“Indeed, I have only one point to make: print media will remain relevant in the years and decades to come,” he added.
While the digital revolution has brought significant convenience in accessing information, Chavez said it does not render the print media obsolete.
“It is true that the digital revolution has made accessing information easier and more convenient than ever before. Never has it been simpler to like, share, and subscribe to news providers whose coverage aligns with our views,” he said.
“But this convenience is not sufficient to relegate print media to the dustbin of history,” he added.
The PCO chief highlighted the uniqueness of the print media – its tangibility, intentionality, authenticity, and capacity for deeper engagements – as key to its enduring relevance.
“These physical formats offer something digital cannot: a tangible sense of ownership, intentionality, authenticity, and deeper engagement with the content and its creators,” he said. (PND)
