Malungkot na ibinalita ni World No. 3 Filipino Pole Vaulter EJ Obiena na hindi na muna ito lalahok sa anumang mga kompetisyon ngayong 2024 dahil sa iniindang spinal injury.
Sa kanyang Facebook post, ikinuwento ni Obiena na patuloy niyang iniinda ang sakit sa likod habang lumalaban para sa Silesia Diamond League nitong nakaraang Linggo, Agosto 25.
Ito rin ang dahilan kung bakit hindi niya nakumpleto ang mga sumunod na attempt sa pole vault competition.
Dahil dito, kinailangan magpatingin ni Obiena sa kanyang doktor sa Italy kung saan batay sa resulta ng isinagawang magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), lumabas na stress fracture sa spine ang sanhi ng kanyang nararamdaman.
Nakumpirma rin sa isinagawang computed tomography (CT) scan sa atleta na mayroon itong fractured L5 vertebra.
“To avoid worsening the fracture, I shall prudently cancel my season, including the Philippines Pole Vault competition scheduled for September 20 (more information to follow on this). Hopefully, now that I’ve identified the source of my back problems this year, with the required 4-weeks off to heal, I’m hoping to return pain-free and ready for the 2025 indoor season!,” paliwanag ni Obiena.
Inamin pa ng Pinoy pole vaulter na kahit pa noong lumaban siya sa Paris Olympics 2024, kung saan lumapag siya sa ikaapat na pwesto, dumaranas na ito ng spinal fracture na inilarawan niya bilang isang ‘risk’ na handa niyang harapin.
“I need to make decisions with my head, not my emotions. The best thing to do right now, with ensuring my best future, is to rest and recuperate and come back even stronger,” mensahe ni Obiena.

Nakatakda sanang lumaban sa tatlo pang international competition si Obiena; Internationales Stadionfest (ISTAF) sa Berlin, Germany; Zurich Diamond League; at Diamond League Final, bago ito lumipad pabalik ng Pilipinas para sa isa pang nakatakdang laban. -VC
